So,
What do you wanna do today without even leaving your comfy couch?
Turn the bedroom lights out?
Control your thermostat?
Or maybe, ask for a delicious recipe while reading that issue of Vogue which you've been putting off for a week now?
You name it, and your smart companion has got it!
Smart speakers are all the heat these days. And there's a good reason behind it. After all, you can make your place interactive with one of these.
With Google and Apple integrating their infamous assistants into their smart home devices, you thought Amazon would stay behind to eat the dirt?
Amazon’s back in the game with its third-generation Echo Dot.
What is it?
Echo dot (3rd Gen) is Amazon’s all-new smart speaker coupled with new fabric design and improved speakers, for richer and better sound. It connects to Alexa (a cloud-based voice service). It not only plays music from your favorite services but also answers to all of your child’s questions, to keep their curiosity at just the right level!
Anyway, Amazon’s line-up of affordable home assistant speakers has been around for quite some time now. It all began with the first-generation echo dot, which later passed on the mantle to the secondd-gen echo dot. However, I must admit, they never really qualified to be your “home assistants”, because of their obvious lack of functionality. But the third-gen Dot is so much different from its predecessors, and that too in countless ways!
Aesthetically, echo dot is no more a distasteful plastic-built device. Neither does it have the unpleasant sharp edges anymore. Overall, it has gotten so much smoother look for itself now.

Coming to the speakers on the all-new echo dot, they seem to be relatively better than the previous two versions, both in quality and loudness. However, caveat emptor, they are still not the best the industry has to offer.
It does all the things that you would probably try just once in your lifetime and then forget about (Haha, nah)! Once you get one, you’ll surely get the hang of it. It'll play you music, read you news, answer your questions, check the weather, set alarms and reminders, control your smart home devices, alongside much more. Everything that your smartphone does, Echo Dot does it undeniably better!
Nonetheless, what’s even better is that it can hear you from far away with the help of (what Amazon boasts as) the “4 Far-field microphones”, even in noisy environments.
The Good:
1. Improved sound and better design than the last generation.
2. Well-experienced A.I.
3. Could hear from across the room with the “4 far-field microphones”, even while playing music*.
4. Could be used as a wired or wireless speaker and connects easily to your phone and PC.
5. Does almost everything that the original Echo does but for just half the price.
6. Actually stands out to be as good in noisy environments as promised by Amazon.
The Not-So-Good:
1. Doesn't sound quite as mighty as its bigger sibling- Echo.
2. The “4 far-field microphones” are sometimes not enough to hear the commands from across the room.
3. You can’t sync multiple devices to play your stuff.
Our Take:
Alright, with the way echo dot performed in our tests, I think it’s safe to say that you’d be utilizing your money better by flushing it down the drain than by buying one of these. (Again, just messing with ya)! Echo dot Gen 3 looks promising.
It almost mimics the insane functionality of some high-end home speakers available in the market. The experience might not be that innate, though. But, hey, provided the price you get this for, it is very much a bang for your buck!
And if you’re planning to get started with your smart-home project, then echo dot seems to be just the device you may be looking for.
Why? You ask?
Well,
It's so much cheaper than its competition,
It’s arguably the best product available in this price bracket, in its niche.
Plus, it has features almost identical to its expensive counterparts, aaaand...
It looks so much better than even Google’s home mini (all credit to its recent mushy fabric wrap upgrade).
Plus, if you’re a casual listener of music or check out news now and then, then this could be of immense utility to you. After all, it does bring so much convenience to your everyday life. But if having loud speakers (individual unit) is your priority, you might wanna reconsider your choice. And rather, I’d suggest you go for its elder sibling- Echo, in that case.
MIND YOU.
